Thankyou For Your Visit
The Pregnancy
Well this is where it all starts. The mother is pregnant and it is really important that her health is looked after.Nine months may seem a long time but the time flies. The baby develops quickly and the first scan is within a couple of months. When you get this you can easily see the baby and this can be an emotional time for both mummy and daddy actually seeing their baby for the first time.
Before deciding you want to start a family you need look at your nutrition and your health. It would be ideal if everyone was super fit and ate all the best foods but I know we do not live in an ideal world. The best advice would be that if you smoke try and give it up. Also eat a good balanced diet of lots of fruit and vegetables, minerals, fibre, nutrients, carbohydrates, healthy oils and proteins. Exercise is always good when thinking about starting a family also.Eat lots of greens, the greener the better for folic acid.
Baby Birth
The baby soon comes and with a bit of luck the birth will go smooth. The mother will be healthy and give birth to a lovely little boy or girl.It will be a strange time as your household will have a new edition. It will be a creation of both of you, with both of your genes and genetic information to give the baby characteristics from both of you.The baby will then need to develop a personality. This is generally created by all the baby will see and learn through the early years.
The mother will need to decide if she is going to breast feed or not.this is generally considered the best way.The clip on the umbilical chord soon comes off as it dries out.
Breast Feeding
For the first six months of the babies life it is considered that breast milk is the best food and provides all the goodness your baby needs. You will need to make sure you are comfortable and that the baby is well supported. When you are breastfeeding you are better off not giving the baby other food or drink. The more breast milk you give the baby the more you will produce.Mothers milk is the best for fighting off infections and diseases. It would be a great thing to give your baby breast milk as long as you can.
Mother
The mother really needs to be looked after by the father and others in the family. She may feel drained so making sure she has peace of mind and a good balanced diet with plenty of sleep is important. So many dads get up in the night when baby cries to give mummy a rest.
Winding
As you can see the baby has a little foamy look around his mouth. This often indicates that the baby has a little trapped wind.Normally mummy or daddy wind the baby lightly tapping their back when holding them or just lean then forward a little and the baby will normally burp up the wind like us.
Sleepless nights
Much of this depends on your feeding patterns but generally you feed the baby as it needs it.If baby has been used to being fed at 3am then the baby will want it then regular just like us wanting tea at tea time. The only way the baby can let us know is to cry for it.Sometimes the baby gets colic and that might make it cry. Many people get really stressed to hear a baby crying and I know about this one but it goes before long and becomes a distant memory and an experience of bringing up children.
If you are having problems with the crying then do not keep it to yourself.Talk to the father,a relative or friend.Try not to build up the pressure, their will always be someone who will help even if you have to call someone and seek advice.
Expressing Milk
You may want to express milk if your baby is not sucking well and you still want to feed it with breast milk. You can express milk with a breast pump and there are a variety of these to purchase. They will need to be sterilised after every time they are used. Before you start wash your hands.Expressing milk is often done for babies that are premature or ill, but it is important to keep doing it so you keep producing. The pictures are a guide on how to do this. You can store breast milk in the fridge 4oc or lower for up to five days.It can also be stored in the freezer for up to two weeks in the tiop part of the fridge or in a deep freezer for up to six months at minus 18 oc. Breastmilk must always be stored in a sterilised container. If frozen you must thaw the milk out in the fridge.Once defrosted it will need to be used straight away.Do not use a micro wave to warm or defrost breast milk
Mums Milk
The food you give your baby is really important and every day counts.the longer you can feed the baby with breast milk the better. When you do start to put your baby on mushy food (blended) remember to give them a wide variety of different foods to get them used to a variety of meals. Do not give your baby any extra salt, sugar or spices. The natural sugar and salt in foods is enough without adding any extra.
Your baby should be healthy and gaining weight after the first two weeks. In the first 48 hours your baby will probably only have 1 or two wet nappies. From the fifth day you will probably get around six wet nappies in a 24 hour period.
Your first babies poo will have a blackish colour which will look like tar, this is called meconium. after three days this will go lighter, greenish and runnier. Your baby will pass 2 stools a day from the fourth day and it will be the size of a two pound coin. If your breast and nipples are sore seek advice from a professional/midwife/health visitor who will be able to give advice.
Baby with solid foods
Your baby will be ready to go on solid foods when they can sit up and hold their head steady. hand, eye and mouth co- ordination looking at food and wanting to grab it and put it in their mouths themselves. They will then want to swallow the food rather than spitting it out and getting it all over their faces.
Try getting a small piece of banana as it is soft and if your baby can sit and hold their head up themselves give it to them. watch to see if they eat it by themselves. Remember to never leave your baby alone when you are feeding them to avoid risk of choking.
Different Milks
Here are a few points to consider when feeding your baby.
1) You can introduce formula but carry on breastfeeding.
2) You can introduce infant formula but carry on breastfeeding.
3) You can express breastmilk to be given by bottle.
4) The baby may take milk in a cup, depending on the age.
5) Cows milk should not be given to a child under 1 year old.
6) Under 12 months old never give your baby :- evaporated milk, condensed milk, dried milk, sheeps milk, goats milk, or any other like rice milk or almond milk.
7) soya formula should only be given if prescribed by a general practicioner.
8) All infant formula milk in the shops should meet the legal standards and the choice is yours.
Common problems feeding
When you make feeds it is ideal to make fresh feeds rather than keep them longer than 24 hours. Some babies bring up more milk than others after feeding, this is called possetting or gastric reflux and this is not unusual. Generally if your baby is putting on weight on it is good if not see your doctor or health visitor. Which ever way you feed you baby is up to you, but if you go onto formula milk remember to stick to the recommended amounts. Too much can make your baby constipated or thirsty. Sometimes if you are breast feeding your baby may cry or feel unsettled over a pattern, keep a not of this and have a look at what you are eating and drinking, such as drinks containing caffeine, diet drinks, dairy products, fruit squashes and chocolate. If you need advice talk to your health visitor.
Eating at the table
From an early age it is a good thing to have your family eating around the table. this will form a family bond. When your baby is ready you can put your baby in a high chair while you are sat at the table. You can see them and talk to them and they can watch you eat and copy by eating some soft foods. Your baby generally goes on solids after 6 months.
Your baby will probably make a mess but do not worry, you are all together. Give your baby a good well balanced diet without adding salt, sugar and spices. Things like stews, broths, and rice pudding are great blended or mushed up. Fresh made food is better than having food with additives. If your baby seems to have allergies to certain foods like they break out in a rash see your health visitor or doctor and they will advise you what to not include in your babies food.
Bath time
Well yes you have probably gathered, we used the sink You can go out and buy a baby bath and many people use these. In our house it was more fun to use the kitchen sink. If you have a dishwasher it will make good use of your sink. But put a sheet on the floor as the baby will splash. Plastic baby bath will be more ideal if your baby is younger i.e. months. As my baby here is 1 year old but he does look happy. Never leave your baby on their own when washing them, not even for a second.
Family Life
Many couples have their children together so they can grow up together. This is entirely up to yourselves and your finances. But it is much easier when you have everything from your first baby. If the second child is the same sex you could save on many of the clothes also. I think if you can have them close together it is good. Also it gives them a bond and an adventure together
